Bamboo is a fast-growing plant with ecological, economic, and social benefits. It is a type of grass with a woody stem that adapts easily to a range of climatic and soil conditions, which makes it an important component of many forest environments. Bamboo has much ecological significance that makes it one of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR)’s top choices for its rehabilitation program under the Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP).
Because of these holistic benefits, the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok, Thailand declared September 18 as World Bamboo Day with the goal to promote bamboo as a resource that can be utilized for sustainable development. In the Philippines, Proclamation No. 1401 declaring the month of September as Philippine Bamboo Month was issued recently this June 2022 which recognizes the need to instill in the national consciousness of the Filipino people the importance of the bamboo plant and its products.
