FMB CONDUCTS VARIOUS ACTIVITIES IN CELEBRATION OF PHILIPPINE BAMBOO MONTH

The Forest Management Bureau conducted various Bamboo-related activities last September as part of their celebration for World Bamboo Day and Philippine Bamboo Month with the theme “Industriyang Kawayan para sa Paglago ng Ekonomiya at Kalikasan.”

September 9 – Launching of the first episode of the Likhang Kawayan Series: Kaya ng Kawayan. The video showcased the importance of the Philippine bamboo industry to the people of Maasin, Iloilo, known as the Bamboo Capital of the Philippines, and featured some of the town’s bamboo enterprises. 

September 13 – National Simultaneous Bamboo and Tree Planting Activity was held through an active collaboration with the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Department of Agriculture (DA). It was graced by the presence of His Excellency, President Ferdinand R. Marcos, Jr., who planted a Kawayang Tinik at the Old Sanitary Landfill in San Mateo Rizal as part of the rehabilitation strategies in the said landfill. Through the said activity, more than 140,000 seedlings and bamboo planting materials were planted in a total land area of 198 hectares from the 133 planting sites in the country’s 16 regions. 

September 16 -The Bureau also participated in the 1st Philippine Bamboo Scientific Conference of the Philippine Bamboo Society of Advocates, Inc. (PBSAI) where researchers and academe presented the latest available and emerging bamboo technologies.

September 18– the Bureau celebrated World Bamboo Day by posting an Audio-Visual Presentation (AVP) on the conduct of the National Simultaneous Bamboo and Tree Planting Activity held on September 13, 2022

September 28– The second episode of the Likhang Kawayan Series was launched entitled  “Lutuan sa Kawayanan” andfeatured some of the famous local bamboo dishes in the town of Maasin, Iloilo such as the Ginat-an nga Tambo kag Bago-ngon (Bamboo Shoots with Horn Snail and Coconut Milk) and Atsarang Tambo (Pickled Bamboo Shoots).

September 29 – the Bureau conducted a bamboo lecture campaign entitled “Kawayan sa Paaralan” at Antipolo National High School, Antipolo City. Forester Jinia D. Yaneza and Mr. Kim Cyrus M. Miranda discussed the importance of bamboo and the proper way of planting it. The students also conducted a bamboo planting activity as part of the lecture proper.

September 30 – As the culmination of the Philippine Bamboo Month, the DENR through the Forest Management Bureau represented the DENR Secretary to present the “Situationer on Bamboo Resource and Policy Directions” to the 1st Philippine Bamboo Summit organized by Bamboo Warriors of the Philippines. Atty. Ray Thomas F. Kabigting presented and emphasized the need for the protection and conservation of bamboo as a sustainable non-timber forest product. He also introduced the policies and initiatives related to bamboo plantation and industry development such as DAO 2021-26 and DAO 2019-22 and highlighted the prioritization of bamboo in the implementation of the Enhanced National Greening Program (ENGP).
